6. Legal bases for processing
VetWise processes personal data where a lawful basis or statutory authorization exists. Under the UAE PDPL, processing may be based on valid consent or another permitted legal ground. Where the GDPR applies, relevant legal bases may include consent; performance of a contract or pre-contractual steps; compliance with legal obligations; and legitimate interests such as proportionate security, fraud prevention and service improvement where those interests are not overridden by individuals' rights. Optional marketing consent is not a condition of accessing Services that do not require it.
7. Consent and withdrawal
Where consent is required, VetWise requests a clear affirmative action for a specified purpose. Acknowledgement of this Privacy Policy is separate from optional marketing consent. Optional marketing boxes are not preselected, and refusal does not prevent otherwise available registration or service access. Where appropriate, consent records may include date, time, notice version and a user or session identifier. Individuals may withdraw marketing consent at any time through an unsubscribe link or official contact channel. Withdrawal does not affect processing lawfully performed before withdrawal or processing supported by an independent lawful basis.
8. Cookies and similar technologies
VetWise may use strictly necessary technologies for authentication, security and service delivery; preference technologies to remember settings; analytics technologies to understand performance; and, where implemented, marketing technologies for advertising measurement. Non-essential technologies will be activated only with valid consent where required. Users will be offered appropriate choices to manage or withdraw preferences. Further information is provided in the VetWise Cookie Policy and applicable cookie preference interface.
9. Disclosure of personal data
VetWise may disclose personal data to authorized service providers for hosting, cloud infrastructure, development, maintenance, authentication, payments, email delivery, customer communications, analytics and security; to professional legal and accounting advisers; and to competent authorities where legally required. Processors acting for VetWise are subject to appropriate contractual, confidentiality and security obligations. VetWise does not sell personal data or disclose it to unrelated third parties for their independent marketing without a lawful basis and any required consent.
10. International data transfers
VetWise is established in the United Arab Emirates and serves international users. Providers and technical infrastructure may be located outside the UAE or a user's country. International transfers are subject to applicable legal requirements and suitable safeguards, which may include contractual terms, technical and organizational measures and recognized transfer mechanisms. Where the GDPR applies, transfers outside the European Economic Area are subject to a valid mechanism, such as an adequacy decision or appropriate safeguards including Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.
11. Data retention
Personal data is retained only as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law. Account information is retained during account activity and for an appropriate subsequent period; educational records as necessary to administer access and learning history; transaction records for applicable tax, accounting and commercial periods; marketing records to administer subscriptions and evidence consent or withdrawal; technical logs for proportionate security and troubleshooting periods; and correspondence as necessary to resolve matters or defend claims. Data no longer required will be securely deleted, anonymized or otherwise disposed of, subject to legal obligations.

16. Artificial intelligence and educational content
VetWise may use AI and advanced technologies for audio and video enhancement, educational editing, translation, localization, subtitling, accessibility and content organization. AI-assisted content production does not inherently require processing users' personal data. Where AI-enabled services process personal data, VetWise will ensure an appropriate legal basis and relevant contractual and security safeguards. Personal data will not be used for unrelated AI-model training without an appropriate lawful basis and any required notice or consent. Applicable safeguards for automated processing will be respected.
